Roy Bell

After graduating with firstclass Honours in Graphic Design and Calligraphy at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee, Roy studied theatre and opera design in London with Margaret Harris on the prestigious MOTLEY Theatre Design Course. 

His theatre designs include Alfie, starring Adam Faith and directed by Frank Dunlop; Pastimes national tour with Rosemary Leach; five seasons with the London New Play Festival including Best Design award for Julie Baloo's Tom and Gerry; Abigail's Party by Mike Leigh at Perth Rep directed by Dominic Hill; The Bassett-Table directed by Guy Retallack; From Hell She Came by Stephen Colley at the Edinburgh Festival; Temporary Girl at the Tron and USA transfer directed by Phil Setren; Much Revue about Nothing and Tales My Lover Told Me starring Susie Blake at the King's Head Theatre London; Pinter's The Lover directed by Michael Billington at BAC London; The Hired Man for the Steam Industry at the Finborough Theatre London; Time Flows for Streetwise Opera in London directed by William Relton; Romeo and Juliet and Much Ado About Nothing at LAMDA and Arthur Miller's Two Way Mirror starring Jay Benedict and Abi Titmuss at the Coutyard Theatre, Covent Garden directed by Mike Miller.

Opera designs include Handel's Ezio at the Royal College of Music directed by William Relton; The Cunning Little Vixen directed by William Relton for Surrey Opera; Aida, Turandot, Faust, Don Giovanni, Macbeth, Hansel and Gretel, L'Elisir d'Amore, The Pilgrim's Progress, Nabucco, The Tales of Hoffmann and Don Carlos for Scottish opera companies; La Perichole and Riders to the Sea for Morley Opera London directed by Christopher Cowell; The Marriage of Figaro for Midsummer Opera and for the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, The Coronation of Poppea directed by Henry Mason and Pelleas and Melisande directed by William Relton.  


Opera designs in Denmark include Il Turco in Italia, Don Pasquale, Orlando and Rinaldo for Den Ny Opera all directed by Christopher Cowell and Die Walkure directed by Troels Kold.

Musicals designs include Rent directed by Tim Zimmermann and Fiddler on the Roof directed by Pia Rosenbaum and starring Kurt Ravn.

Designs for dance include costumes for In Your Rooms by Hofesh Shechter at The Place and QEH.

Film work includes costume work for Dr Who spin off Downtime, Lead Painter for Fantastic Mr Fox animated feature directed by Wes Anderson and Lead Painter for Frankenweenie directed by Tim Burton

Roy was the orchestra manager for Midsummer Opera for the first ten years of the company's artistic directorship under David Roblou.

Performing credits include the title role in The Magic Flute.
